Songs of the Monsoon

The monsoon is knocking at our doorstep. While the southern part of India is already drenched with heavy rainfall, the northern part of the country still awaits the sweet smell, that emanates from the first drop of rain falling on the sun baked earth. The rains have always been unpredictable, the science of meteorology notwithstanding. However, some things have remained steadfast down the centuries, and one of these is India’s concept of monsoon music. Ragas that bring out the romance of rain are a part of our heritage.

I have just come across your blog, and have been listening to the songs all day. Thanks a ton for all the wonderful music. Could you direct me to some more Amir Khans on the Net, especially the Hamsadhwani vilambit, “Jai mate vilamb”? Also, why am I not being able to download any of the songs on clicking the Download button on your site?

Answer to the quiz: Singers are Mukesh and Suraiyya

    @ Gubbles

I checked the links and they seem OK to me. I presume that you are double clicking on the ‘Download’ links. Instead right click and ‘Save Target As…’

Amir Khan’s Raga Hamsadhwani Vilambit (Jai Mate) can be downloaded in .wma format from :

    Hope this helps you. 🙂

    @ Gubbles

Only 50% correct as you forgot to mention the name of the film. The film is Lekh (1949). However, I have already sent you the song and an e-book as promised.

thanks to get me in touch with nature and its feel. its really a great job that you are getting us the inner / soul feeling of nature as classical singing is inner soul singing and it is always sung of own pleasure. It is not to please the other what is being done in commercial songs and singing.
