Born in Azamgarh District, Uttar Pradesh, Channulal Mishra received his training in music under his father Pandit Badri Prasad Mishra, and then from Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana. Channulal Mishra is a versatile and popular vocalist with a rich repertoire of Khayals, Thumris, Dadras, Kajris, Chaitis and Bhajans. He is also a scholar who has delved into the aesthetic subtleties of Indian classical music under the guidance of Thakur Jaidev Singh.
Amitabh Bachchan, the film star is known to be a big fan of Mishra ji especially of his Purab Ang Gayaki that may have inspired the actor to sing in his films in the style for which he is so well known for.
He received the Naushad Award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1995.

He is a unique artist…his style is soul touching. amongst best vocalists but what an irony he’s not honored with any National Award ….is it because he is not a well connected person ? Even some of his desciples got Padmashree. padma bhushan etc.

I totally agree with you. I am a big fan of his and very disappointed that great artists like Pandit Channulal Mishra are ignored by the jury members who decide whom to honor and when. Late Ustad Vilayat Khan rebelled against this system and refused all awards from the Indian government.

We came in contect with Padit Channulal Mishraji in 70’s.
During his All India Radio , Amadavad live concert he stayed at my sister,Dr.Bhanuben Trivedi’s Home.
He was following Ramayani Pandit Kapindraji of Merath who lived in Sundernagar, New Delhi and Founder of Ramayan Vidyapith and Ramayan Sanmelan.
Pandit Channulalji is an Unique artist with his style who connects to the soal of the listeners.

I was lucky to attend his concert last weekend (Jul 2009). His concerts are unique and they have a LIFE – when he explains the whole context and literature of the song with humor tit-bits. I have indeed learned a lot, about some terms of Classical music from the concert. I almost felt like I was a student – and he was a Guru teaching me music there!
Before this I have seen Smt. Girija Devi doing the same at a concert (my first one by her) in Nov 2006. It makes novices like me take an interest in the music.

It is highly indicating of govts insescivility towards treditional art & culture and polatiking of diffrient award.

He has the full command on nearly all varieties of Indian classical/semiclassical music. On his day he can defeat any great in the art. For, it appears that swara and laya are dancing at his will.

यूँ तो किसी विधा में आजकल का कोई गायक पण्डित जी की सरसता और रञ्जकता के आगे नहीं ठहरता, पर बिना किसी संदेह के मैं यह कहना चाहता हूँ कि रामचरितमानस का गायन पण्डितजी से सुन्दर ढंग से करना मनुष्यमात्र के लिए असम्भव है। ऐसा कोई गायक आजतक न हुआ, न आगे कभी होगा, जिसकी स्वर-लय पर ऐसी जबरदस्त पकड़ हो, जो मानस का मर्म भी समझता हो, और मानस जिसे कण्ठस्थ हो।

I love Pandit ji!
The saddest part for me is the sheer difficulty in laying hands onto his albums.
The best music houses in kolkata dont have his albums on their shelves and inspite of repeated requests they are unable to provide the albums.
I borrowed his albums from my elder brother but sadder part is that this situation drives many to start looking for fee downloads on the net. Am desperately looking for kabir album and krishna madhav but am unable to get them.
