Here are some more songs of my choice and liking. A few gems from my favourite playlist. All the vocalists are renowned names. Firoz Dastur (1919–2008) was a well known, and probably the most successful, Hindustani classical singer from the Parsi community.
Firoz Dastur – Thumri Kafi – Bawre Dam De Gayo Kanha :
Bhimsen Joshi – Thumri Tilang – Kahe Ko Neha Lagaye :
The quality of recital of bhajan by Pt. Jasraj was markedly enhanced by the superb accompaniment of table player. It was a style and ease of the delivery of each beat which has to be savoured. It was “jugalbandi” of sort most enjoyable. But alas, table players other than the famous one, are generally not credited, while their importance and contribution to the performance is no mean affair in itself.
Jugalbandi of Rashid Khan’s raga Yaman with the harmonium, was another most unusual but pleasant experience; as during the first half of the performance tabla’s beat was recorded prominently while the harmonium was placed as a secondary instrument perhaps, by the ingenuity of the recording engineer, but in the second half, harmonium was brought to the fore and the tabla was withdrawn somewhere in the background, and vintage utterances of the Khan was enough to create an atmosphere of sublime quality.
