Four Songs : my Choice 6

After the partition of India in 1947, the new born Pakistan was so beset with insurmountable problems that fine arts virtually remained neglected. History’s largest migration of people had totally upset the equilibrium of the population not only physically but also emotionally and psychologically. During such times, the fine arts could not get the attention of the people. Classical music was neglected more than anything else. The musicians were totally frustrated as there were no takers. Many took refuge in Ghazal singing to make ends meet. The height of despair was reflected in the decision of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan to leave the country and settle back down in India, where connoisseurs of classical music were abound.

In remembrance of those days, here are a few songs of my choice, each one hand picked and posted here for your listening pleasure.

After listening Khan Sahib’s Darbari and Ajay Chakravarty’s Malkauns, a past memory came alive in my mind which I would like to share with you. This is about an incident, which shows the humbleness of Bare Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib. Those days I was a school child (I am 62 at present). Khan Sahib was giving his recital at Ashutosh hall in Kolkata. He started with Alap of Malkauns. It seemed that prior day also he sang the same raga in one of his concert in Kolkata. An ardent fan of him who was following him from the previous concert could not check his anger; stood up and shouted at him at the jam packed hall “Pheer Malkauns!!” khan Sahib was surprised with this kind of reaction. Surmadali fell down on his lap. On further enquiry we all came to know that he was present on the previous night concert where khan Sahib presented the same raga. Khan Sahib was apologetic. He asked the person about his choice. Khan Sahib started his recital with his choice and finished the concert with his choice and that was Darbari.
