How to Download from Smashits.com

I wonder how many Indian Classical Music enthusiasts know that ww.smashits.com (note the ww instead of www) has a few gems of hindustani classical music stored in it’s seemingly bollywood centric server. This portal is not very new and does not boast of a large classical music content but still I managed to download a few pieces of music not available anywhere else. My favourites are about 75-80 songs featured in it’s ‘Smashits Collection‘ (8 CDs). These are now an important part of my indianraga.collection.

See the screenshot of the classical music collection in the category ‘Classical‘ :

And the collection in the category ‘North Indian Classical‘ :

However there is a catch. There is no way you can download a music file directly from this site (sorry, there is one but only by making a small payment). But for mortals like yours truly, who are forever downloading music and would go bankrupt in a few weeks if they continue paying for it, there is always a way out.

But first things first. I would like you folks to go through my earlier post :

How to Download from musicindiaonline.com

As we are going to retrieve the music files from the ‘Internet Explorer Cache‘ it is essential to clean it completely before going further. Firefox users will not be able to download using this method. There are a few tricks for diehard Firefox fans too, but let’s leave them for another time.

After you have cleaned your Internet Explorer Cache, follow the steps mentioned in the post : How to Download from musicindiaonline.com to view your downloading files.

Now unlike musicindiaonline.com which streams it’s music in Real Audio (.ra) or Windows Media Audio (.wma) format, smashits.com uses a Flash Player and streams it’s music in .mp3 format (usually 64 kbps) which is a big plus for those who want to download from this site. Moreover the sound quality of the files is much better than that on musicindiaonline.com (20-24 kbps).

Click on the album you want to download and select the files (you may select all, if you want).

Click on the ‘Play’ button. The Flash Player will open as a pop-up.

Open the Internet Cache folder and you will be able to view your file gradually growing in size as it plays on.

Let it buffer fully (you will see the ‘Bit Rate‘ and ‘Duration‘ of the file appear when it does). You don’t need to play the file to it’s full length but letting it buffer fully is very important.

Copy the file and paste it in the folder of your choice, rename it according to it’s original name and repeat the procedure to download another file. On a fast Broadband connection you may be able to download an album (5-6 songs) in 4-5 minutes.

Watch out for more downloading tips from other music streaming sites in my future posts.

Download and Enjoy Listening !!

What you are doing is social service of the highest order. Bringing the ‘kalakaar’ to the ‘rasik’ calls for a lot of effort, time & selflessness. Kudos! Keep the great work going!

I think this method won’t work. Smashit has changed the way it delivers the content. I can’t see the mp3 player getting displayed in cache. Can you please check and let me know the method. Another site to explore is http://www.raaga.com, even tht has good collection and need to find a way to download from it. Thx.

    @ Sanjeev
I always use this method to download files from not only smashits.com but also pz10.com, imeem.com (the files on this site are masked as .gif files) and many more sites. If you are having a problem with downloading with this method then you must take care to clean your IE cache completely. Disk cleanup utility of Windows is not the best tool to do this. There are lots of free tools available on the web to clean the cache in a more precise manner.

Index.dat files contain ALL your web surfing history since they were (re)created. Here are 3 reasons to delete them:

    (1) They are never resized, and only get bigger.
    (2) Large index.dat files can cause performance problems when browsing.
    (3) To protect your privacy, so others cannot see where you’ve been on the Internet. (You’ll have to delete other files as well; some information is also stored in the registry about where you’ve been.) Index.dat files are hidden, don’t show up in searches (in Windows or DOS) and CANNOT be deleted when Explorer is running.

For those who find it difficult to clean the Index.dat files and their Internet Explorer Cache completely and find more than 4 folders in the Temporary Internet Files folder, I advise to use this utilty which I have compiled specially for this purpose. Please go through the Readme.txt file before using it :

Grretings Guptaji and thanks again for the yoeman services provided by you to all of us who are ardent Indian Classical and Hindustani music Fans !!!!
I recently observed that the site: http://www.in.com , which has a reasonably good collection of music, has changed the way they stream music. Earlier it was possible to download music from the Internet Cache as very lucidly advised by you, but for the past few months, the streamed music files seem to have disappeared from the ” Famous 4 Foilios” visible once you open the Temp folders.

Kindly advise wether any other way to download music from that site.

Hello Sathe ji, its true that things have changed on http://www.in.com. Now they stream the music in real media (Real Player). Such streaming is very difficult, if not impossible, to download. A sound recorder is the only means why which you may capture the music.

The above process look tedious, why not try some good alternative

GoMuzik.com – The source for entertainment news, celebrity gossip and pictures with free mp3, video and lyrics search

There are other alternatives too. For example search for playlist.xml file in the IE cache and copy it somewhere. You will find URLs of all the files in your playlist. Copy all and download with a downloader. If you have an URL Extractor tool then you may download 100s of files in a jiffy.

    Dear Sir,
First of all, I would like to apreciate from the bottom of my heart the extremely benefitial tips provided by you for downloading music from smashits and other streaming websites. The quary I have is that where could I locate my internet cache file, so as to see the file growing in size and then download it? I visited your earlier post and tried to follow the same steps of first clearing the cache and then viewing the files in the “cleanup disc” section, but no file is being shown there and moreover, no buffering is taking place, upon which you pressurized the most. I would hereby like to mention that I am performing all these actions with the help of a screenreader and so would like to know that does the method of downloading compromise with the functions of the screenreader? I would be grateful to you if you could help me sort out this problem.
    Vasundhara Raturi.

For that matter, I could not locate the cache folder also. I found one and the file was not coming there. I think I will find the folder if I try hard enough but first I want to try to pay and download.
