Songs of the Divas 3

Once again, here are a few songs from four of the finest hindustani classical music divas of our time :

Lakshmi Shankar – Na Jao Sainya Pardes :  (Download)

Padma Talwalkar – Ka Karoon Sajni :  (Download)

Parween Sultana – Ja Ja Re Kagawa :  (Download)

Shruti Sadolikar – Sakhi Boond Achanak Laagi :  (Download)

Point to ponder : When a male musician is Muslim he is an Ustad, if Hindu he is a Pandit. Ever wondered why such titles are not conferred to women classical artists ?

Comments are welcome.

I have wondered about this gender bias my whole life, it really does seem so unfair!

In Bengal, there is a title given to women with exceptional vocal talent and that title is “Geetashree”. I believe there is another title prevalent in the world of Classical Music and that is “Vidushi”, but not many artistes use it. I wonder why?

Another thing that I have always wondered is who confers these titles? When is one goodenough to be a ‘Pandit’ or an ‘Ustad’?
    I would love to know…

Geetashree” seems to be a more appropriate title for the female artist. The title “Vidushi” does not reflect the skill level of the person. The titles “Ustad” and “Pandit” were originally meant to establish that the musician in question was skilled enough to take students under his wing.

However, what is quite common now is, a male musician with as minimal experience as 3-4 years starts bestowing these titles onto himself, so as to get more concert value commercially. There is no single authority of significance that can be entrusted with this job. Like it or not, classical musicians are an unorganized lot, and much politics is being played backstage.

Completely agree with Indianraga, its funny how I also confer these titles to musicians in my own way when I save their files in my ard disk. Zakir Hussain has become Ustad Zakir Hussain of late.. In some way its common consensus and for the lovers of Classical music these titles are ways of showing their appreciation.
