Almost everyone who has anything to do with music, both ‘hindustani classical‘ and ‘popular‘ must surely have visited www.musicindiaonline.com more than a few times. This site claims itself to be the largest Indian music resource on the internet. True of course, be it hindustani classical, indipop, bollywood, fusion or regional folk, you name it and it’s all there on this site.
The difference between this site and other file hosting sites is very basic. Whereas musicindiaonline.com has it’s own files on it’s servers and has full control over the streaming quality of the music and also what files to put or remove, other sites like mediafire.com, eSnips.com, 4shared.com and the rest have no such control.
Many of us must have encountered a much wanted song on musicindiaonline.com and wished fervently that there had been a download button on this site. Alas, there is none and no trick such as changing the URL (a’la eSnips) work here.
But for few of us who desperately want a particular music file and are ready to spend a little time, there’s a way out : a simple method by which you can download a file or even multiple files in one go.
Just follow a few simple steps. Remember this trick will work with Internet Explorer only.
Go to the Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Clean all the mess that has been accumulating in the browser’s cache. Once the cache is empty you may go to the musicindiaonline.com site and search for your favourite song or album just as shown in the figure below.
Select the songs to be downloaded by ticking them or if you want them all, tick ‘Select All‘.
Click the ‘Play Selected Songs‘ button. If you have not been to this site recently it will ask you to choose between Real Player and Windows Media Player. Select Windows Media Player as in the pic below :
The player will open up and your playlist will begin to play.
As the file is playing repeat Step 1 (i.e Disk Cleanup). But this time don’t clear the cache but click on the ‘View Files‘ option :
This will open a directory of Internet Cache folders as seen below :
Explore each folder (if you have cleaned your Internet Explorer Cache thoroughly, there should be four of them). You will find your playing file in one of the folders, growing by size as it plays on. Wait for the ‘Duration‘ and ‘Bit Rate‘ details to appear and click on the ‘Play Next‘ button of the player to start playing the next song in the playlist.
You may now Copy or Cut & Paste the previous file to a folder of your choice. The files are in .wma format. Keep on exploring all the folders as the second file plays on and you will find it in one of the folders. Repeat the process.
You need not play each song to it’s full length. On a fast internet connection a 15 minute song may buffer fully in a couple of minutes. But it’s important that you wait for the ‘Duration‘ and ‘Bit Rate‘ details to appear before copying (or cut & paste) the file.
Keeping in mind that musicindiaonline.com has music streaming at a very low bitrate (20-24 kbps) an album consisting of 6-7 songs may be downloaded in 4 to 5 minutes.

Hi,
I am not being able to play any song from musicindiaonline.c**. It is showing only the loading information but nothing else. The files are not being loaded and hence played even after a long wait(5-10 mints). It is to be noted that downloading or uploading anything else is working cool. If anybody have any suggestion/solution, please share.
indianraga said,

@Sdip
Did the player open up ?? I am not very sure about what could be wrong because configurations are different in all systems. However if you are sure you are not having problem with other sites (using windows media player) then maybe the musicindiaonline.com site was down when you tried. Try again. Also use the ‘Help’ option in the Trident Player.

Hi,
I tried your procedure. But none of the folders that opened up from the Cache of Disk cleanup, did not show any .wma file. Why so?
Thanks.
indianraga said,

@Aparna
Are you sure you chose ‘windows media player’ and not ‘real player’ as player option. If you are not sure then click on the ‘windows media player’ icon in the player itself (right bottom corner).
Also you may not have the ’show hidden files and folders’ option enabled. It can be done by opening the Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.

Hi,
I understand now. I had the “show hidden folders” disabled. However, I am facing a new problem now. I am not able to play any songs in musicindiaonline.com wither using Mozilla or IE after I did the cleanup. It gives me an error like this:
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/g/r//play.smil missing.
I am not sure whats going on. What is a .smil file? Did I do something wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Ok..now the music player plays after I switched to windows media player…loll…thanks for the tip.
But, I still cant see the .wma files in the temporary internet files location. I did enable the option to show hidden files and folders.
indianraga said,
May 7, 2008 at 8:05 am
@Aparna
play.smil is the playlist file which contains all the information of the song i.e. cover photo of the album etc..
If you still can’t see the .wma files then you may be going wrong somewhere. It’s very difficult to explain it all here because each system is configured differently and even it’s user doesn’t know in detail the settings of each application.
However check out these and maybe you’ll be lucky on your next attempt ;
1. Make sure you are playing the song in Windows Media Player and NOT Real Player.
2. Empty the Internet Explorer fully and try again.
3. Play the song till the end.
4. Try to improve the Internet Explorer Cache size by going to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > General > Temporary Internet Files > Settings > Amount of Disk Space to Use. Set this atleast 256 MB (my settings)
5. Make sure .wma extension is showing in your normal folders. Sometimes extensions are not showing because of the folder settings and it makes it difficult to recognize file types.

indianraga said,

@Aparna
No you don’t have to do it everytime and definitely not for every song. But it becomes lot easier to find your files if the Cache is empty. Clean it once every week. It has other advantages too…your browsing will be faster.

I suspect you are playing the files in Real Player. Switch to Windows Media Player by clicking it’s icon in the bottom right hand corner of the player (see the screenshot of the player in the post and red circled icon)
Music Lover said,

This is a great find, thanks to IndianRaga!
Here’s what I do. Some may find it useful.
Even if I clean my cache, I still have about 20 folders (all empty) in the …\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 directory. When musicindiaonline plays files, they get dumped randomly into any one of these folders. As you can imagine, its a pain to search every folder for every song. So what I do is this.
I start a file search in windows (Start–>Search–>All files and folders). Specify the right directory for the search giving the complete path (this should end with \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5). In the advanced options, specify the type of file to look for as “Windows Audio File”. Make sure the “Search subfolders” option is checked. When you run the search, the .wmv files will show right up.
You only have to do this once for every session. As the you play more songs, the newly downloaded files will be continually added in the search results window. For hindi film songs, the filename generally is the first few characters of the song title, so its easy to identify which file is which.
An added benefit is that you don’t have to clean your cache at all! In fact, once downloaded, the files remain there for a while (but they may be deleted any time). So in principle you may be able to do the following. Just use musicindiaonline like you used to, without bothering with the downloads. At the end of the day, just retrieve all the .wmv files from the temporary internet file folder!
indianraga said,

@ Music Lover
If you clean your Internet Explorer Cache completely you should have maximum 4 folders. The Diskcleanup utility of the windows is not always the best utility to do this. It does not delete the index.dat files that reside in the cache folder and the secret of too many folders lies here. With time and usage of IE the number of these folders keep on increasing. Index.dat are system files and cannot be deleted from within the windows. Although there are many free utilities available on the internet for deleting index.dat files, I use CCleaner v1.27. It cleans all index.dat files on system boot up. The latest version can be downloaded at :
http://www.ccleaner.com
The method explained by you is the easiest no doubt, but the files will not appear in the folder until the files are PLAYED fully, even if they have buffered completely. For example : for a 15 min song, you will have to wait full 15 min and let the file finish playing to be able to copy it. Whereas by the other method you only have to wait for the file to buffer fully and move on to the next file (a 15 min song takes a couple of min. to buffer). Such files will not appear in \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 directory. Only files that have PLAYED fully will appear here and not files that have BUFFERED fully.
Don’t hesitate to ask if you need to know more.

Index.dat files contain ALL your web surfing history since they were (re)created. Here are 3 reasons to delete them:
(1) They are never resized, and only get bigger.
(2) Large index.dat files can cause performance problems when browsing.
(3) To protect your privacy, so others cannot see where you’ve been on the Internet. (You’ll have to delete other files as well; some information is also stored in the registry about where you’ve been.)
Index.dat files are hidden, don’t show up in searches (in Windows or DOS) and CANNOT be deleted when Explorer is running.
For those who find it difficult to clean the Index.dat files and their Internet Explorer Cache completely and find more than 4 folders in the Temporary Internet Files folder, I advise to use this utilty which I have compiled specially for this purpose. Please go through the Readme.txt file before using it :
http://ir.fileave.com/files/index.zip

musicindiaonline player has two options for playing files : WMP or Real Player.
Are you sure you are playing the files with the ‘Windows Media Player’ option.
How many sub-folders do you see in the Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder?? If there are more than 4 then somehow you have not managed to clean the Cache properly.

Although it is very difficult to indentify such problems as every system has a different configuration and different settings, I’ll try whatever I can do to help you.
Make sure that you are not exploring the Cache of another user on your system. Go to : C:\Documents and Settings. Search for all files (*.*) in this folder (usually the default in most systems).
Then in the search results window you may examine if there are more than one Temporary Internet Files folders. These are listed as :
C:\Documents and Settings\UserA\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\UserB\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
where UserA and UserB are the usernames on your system.
Also click Tools in IE > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings
Check the ‘amount of disc space to use’, if it is 0 then the Cache will not store anything. Set it for atleast 256 MB.
Rest assured your Cache folders cannot be empty unless you have installed some software and set it for system cleanup at windows start (in this case too you must see atleast some files from your recent browsing). All files from the web pages you browse must download to your hard-disc first before you see them.
Try this and let me know.

@ Bharat
Yes it is possible to save the files from the Firefox cache. But it is a more tedious way to retrieve the files. Firstly, Firefox cache files have jumbled characters as the filenames without any extension. Moreover you will have to open each file from the cache (in an editor like notepad) to view its header info. Any file with ID3 as its header is a mp3 file (only if it is tagged). In wma files too, there is embedded information about the encoder.
Finally, it is better if you switch to Internet Explorer if you need to save music files more often.

Thank you very much for your reply , infact i did the same way as you said to download using firefox and its working fine. By the way i also see on indianraga you said about downloading from ITC and i found out best way is to just add on firefox dowdload helper and it will take straight from url and you can down laod in just fraction of second. You can also use this downdload helper to downlaod from smashits and save file as .mp3 , just to share with you as its pleasure, and by this way we can retain our old rich culture of music among new generation .
Again thanks for your advise.

I know Firefox leaves the users with many options. It has numerous extensions and plugins. But the problem lies with the fact that most of my visitors are non-techies and more than half of them use Internet Explorer. I am doing my best to help these people.
By the way, I am still working on cracking hummaa.com but uptil now have not succeeded. It uses rtmpt streaming protocol and songs are relayed in its player in very small (1 KB) packets. This is the only site that gives me the creeps. Can you give me a clue ?

indianraga said,

@ yogesh parvate :
Things are the same as before on musicindiaonline.com. Take care of two things :
1. Empty your IE cache fully. Use index.zip file (link in the sidebar) if you are not sure.
2. Make sure you are playing with the ‘windows media player’ option.
If you still cannot see .wma files, then you try copying play.asx file from the cache. The rest I will tell you if you need it.

@ yogesh parvate
It may be a temporary glitch. It has not happened to rest of us. If you want to download the files directly, save the play.asx file, open it in notepad, you will find the URLs of all the songs in the playlist. You may then use a downloader to download the files. Don’t forget to join the ‘Base‘ URL and the ‘File‘ URL. I always use this method. Another easy way is to install ExploreXP :
http://www.explorerxp.com/
It has a simple interface face and lets you view all hidden files including IE cache files in a more convenient way.

Somehow my system is not allowing me to download the latest version of real player and hence cannot listen to the music from Raag.com and thereby cannot determine wether one can capture the streamed files from the internet cache folder as is the case with Musicindia online and Smash hits.
Can you please try and see wether you can download from Guruji and thence Raag.com.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe some files of your old version of Real Player are in memory (used by windows) which is preventing the new version to install. I advise you to first uninstall the old version completely, restart windows and try installing the new version.
The latest version of Real Player is 11.0. To get it you have 2 options. One is to go to http://www.real.com or http://www.real.com.au/ and download the installer which is not really the main program and is just 350 KB. It will let you install the main program via the internet.
To get the main program from a third party source (12 MB) go to :
http://www.download.com/RealPlayer/3000-2646_4-10073040.html
I advise you to prefer the second option. If you have the main program then you may repair your Real Player if it gets corrupted at any later stage without depending upon the internet.
Hope this helps you.

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt reply. Tried exacty as you said to no avail. In fact tried both options !!!!
The error message displayed is” Decompresion failed due to possible download error.Try downloading again or contact system administrator”.
In spite of trying again have been getting the above message repeatedly.
Could this be somehting to do with corrupted registry keys ?????????
Thanks again for your efforts.
In the mean time have discovered the VLC media player, which is fantastic as it seems to play most music connected audio and video file extensions. !!!!!
I’m sure you are already aware about it !!!!!

Dear Guptaji
I tried all the tricks mentioned to download from MIO..I was able to download the files earlier but not anymore….
I installed the index utility…deleted all the index.dat files
installed and used the cccleaner as well
but still the problem persists…the files are not getting cached.
In the temp folder I see a new folder AntiPhishing with a dat file in it…not sure if this could be the reason.
Pls pls help…

Hi All,
I tried something different to capture the audio stream from MIOL and wanted to find out if others can put it to use and let me know the results..
a. Download Flashget (Guess IndianRaga already uses this and is a very nifty tool for several types of downloads)
b. Open the track you want from Music India Online.
c. In the Temp Internet Files, as described above one can find the *.asx file.
d. The location of the actual *.wma file is split into 2 parts. Open the above asx file in textpad and bridge the two…can provide more details if needed..
e. What you’ll get by doing the above step is a link to the file and open Flashget to add this to the list…
f. In a few minutes (depending on the net speed!) one can get the entire file downloaded..
This has worked for 4 albums for me so far…
Guess IndianRaga mentions about this in his Post 61 partly..
Thanks again for the great site and great work !!
Cheers
Shankar

@ Bansuri
You said it all and very correctly too. For those people who do not want to search for each and every file from the IE Cache this is the fastest and more reliable method.
Problem is, not many people are so tech savvy so as to find and join the split URL, then copy and paste the final URL in the downloader.

You just have to highlight the file by clicking on it, copy (ctrl +c) and paste (ctrl +v) it in the folder of your choice. e.g. C:\Mp3 or on the desktop directly. Once you copy the file it remains in the clipboard memory until you paste it somewhere.
An url file is very small in size (only a few bytes) but the sound file is always bigger usually more than 1 MB. To be able to see the file size, you can enable the size column by right clicking the column bar and ticking the size option.

Hi!
Revisited this site after a long time and saw your reply to my post 23 above. Thanks. Running CrapCleaner every once in a while is a great idea, as you suggested. But having to do it every time you need a song is a drag. I’m still using the search method and it works just fine. To catch all possible locations, these are the parameters I use for the search
All or part of file name: *.wma
Look in: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\
Put a checkmark next to “search system folders”, “hidden files and folders” and “search subfolders”
Also, I don’t have to wait till the whole song is played. The file shows up in the search results as soon as the song is buffered.
To record streaming audio from any other site, I highly recommend TotalRecorder (www.highcriteria.com/). I don’t know how much it costs now, but I paid $10 for it several years ago when it was a new product. I get free upgrades, and it’s a great tool.

You don’t need to run CCleaner everytime you want to find a song. Once in a week is more than enough. The idea is to keep the IE Cache folders to a minimum of 4.
You may also try ExploreXP, a Windows Explorer alternative which makes the search task so easy. Unlike in Windows Explorer, ExploreXP lets you watch the songs buffer as they play on. When they have buffered fully, you may then copy them to the location of your choice.
Instead of a commercial software, you may use the open source software Audacity from sourceforge.net. It records any streaming sound as nicely as any other tool.

@ lakshmi subbarathnam
You may record the streaming music using a desktop sound recorder like ‘Audacity’ (freeware) or similar tool.
